Sacrificing the Innocent Ones

Note: This interesting entry is directly taken from Friendster Buletin.

Everybody makes mistakes; that's why they put erasers on pencils

A group of children were playing near
two railway tracks, one still in use
while the other disused. Only one child
played on the disused track, the rest
on
the operational track.

The train came, and you were just
beside
the track interchange. You could make
the train change its course to the
disused track and saved most of the
kids. However, that would also mean the
lone child playing by the disused track
would be sacrificed. Or would you
rather
let the train go its way?

Let's take a pause to think what kind
of
decision we could make.............
..
..
..
How do you decide?
..
..
No cheating...
..
..
..
..
What is your decision?
..
..
..
..
..
..
..
..
Most people might choose to divert the
course of the train, and sacrifice only
one child. You might think the same
way,
I guess.

Exactly, I thought the same way
initially because to save most of the
children at the expense of only one
child was rational decision most people
would make, morally and emotionally.

But, have you ever thought that the
child choosing to play on the disused
track had in fact made the right
decision to play at a safe place?

Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed
because of his ignorant friends who
chose to play where the danger was.

This kind of dilemma happens around us
everyday. In the office, community, in
politics and especially in a democratic
society, the minority is often
sacrificed for the interest of the
majority, no matter how foolish or
ignorant the majority are, and how
farsighted and knowledgeable the
minority are.

The child who chose not to play with
the
rest on the operational track was
sidelined. And in the case he was
sacrificed, no one would shed a tear
for
him.

The friend who forwarded me the story
said he would not try to change the
course of the train because he believed
that the kids playing on the
operational
track should have known very well that
track was still in use and that they
should have run away if they heard the
train's sirens.

If the train was diverted, that lone
child would definitely die because he
never thought the train could come over
to that track!

Moreover, that track was not in use
probably because it was not safe. If
the
train was diverted to the track, we
could put the lives of all passengers
on
board at stake! And in your attempt to
save a few kids by sacrificing one
child, you might end up sacrificing
hundreds of people to save these few
kids.

While we are all aware that life is
full
of tough decisions that need to be
made,
we may not realize that hasty decisions
may not always be the right one.

"Remember that what's right isn't
always
popular... and what's popular isn't
always right."

Simply Irresisti-BALL

17th August 2007 (Fri)

Ursula had its annual ball yesterday. It sadly clashed with the International Ball which was much cheaper($39 vs $60) and should be good as well. The date of International Ball was announced after I've promised my partner to go for the Ursula Ball. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my first ball and learn a lot from it though I admit that I was a crappy partner. Pity Wei Min for having me.

Funny Faces of Me while A Mastermind Turned 20

12&13th Aug 2007 (Sun & Mon)

Mastermind Kai Xun turned 20 on Mon, 13th Aug 2007. Detailed explanation of his b'day celebration can be found in a soggy mind

Sze Huey has this tendency of taking pictures of me with funny expressions. Haha..well I don't mind it. Enjoy them actually! I made a story out of them this time.

During Kai Xun's b'day celebration dinner in Unilodge,

Kai Xun was cutting the cake

when I suddenly wanted to take the oranges on the chocolate cake
(Note: While typing this entry, Leonard came in and gave me 2 shoots whisky (Black Label).I'm a little tipsy now)

I planned to steal a slice of orange

I made my move

Stole one =)

This is Kai Xun cutting cake in Ursula Hall.

It was difficult planning a surprise for a person who usually plans other people's birthday party. I wouldn't say that we had a great plan but at least Kai Xun enjoyed himself!

City2Surf

A week lagging. This event was actually last Sun in Sydney (12th August 2007). We booked a bus and were set for a day trip to Sydney specially for this 14km-charity marathon event. Cost us $38 for the event and $20 for the transportation. Well, it was for charity after all. We had fun at the end of the day and that mattered the most.

There were helicopters flying above us, forming words in the sky. This one said, "HI JH"
Didn't get what it meant. "Hi, Jia Huei" maybe =p Haha..

We started off behind (back of the pack) as we stated that we were not running competitively. You could imagine the sea of people covering the whole street. The winner actually finished the race in about 50 minutes before we even started running.

People dressing up creatively and offering free beer. Nice, weren't they? Even gave us encouragement as we moved on.

We basically took our own sweet time and walked our way through the finishing line, which explained why you can't see the crowd around us anymore. Oh no no..the real reason was because we diverged and had breakfast in Mc Donalds before continuing the race.

One of the best picture we took along the way. Well, needless to say, I was the one behind the lens =p Every single kilometer was marked with banners. We completed the race in 4 hours and 30 minutes (Reminder: the winner took about 50 minutes) by running the last 100 meters and ended up in the bottom 100. So cool right? Our names proudly appeared 2 days later in Sydney Morning Herald at the bottom of the list =)

YESNO

4th August 2007 (Sat)

Just read Amanda's blog. Still as interesting as before. Her latest post was something I can genuinely relate to.

Being nice means you're making the people you're being nice to happy. Some people enjoy making their friends happy, at the cost of their precious time (I admit seeing the thankful faces of our friends can be really rewarding). Conversely, you'll indirectly suffer from it at times. You feel being made use of. You question yourself whether it's worth going through all you've done to help them.

It's our choice, really. Learn to say 'No' and you don't have to face all of these. But you're faced with another problem: you'll be regarded as a friend who are not always willing to lend a helping hand. You might've provided your reasons of not helping but that sort of dilemma is unavoidable. At the same time, you feel bad for not helping. However, by saying 'No', you escape from the trouble of having to go through all the hassle just to help your friend.

If we're not willing to give up our good boy/good gal image or it's simply too hard to say 'No', we have to bear with the consequences of not being rejective.

Yes or no, the choice is ours.
We reap what we sow.
