So Glad...

30th March 2008 (Sun)

One after another told me they weren't attending today...

"This might turn ugly...what if it's only High Com and a few students.."

Meet Dato' Salim Hashim, The Malaysian High Commissioner in Australia. He came to ANU to meet fellow Malaysian students for the last time before his term ends on 4th April.

Thank God the attendance weren't too bad after all... At least the Q&A session was well heated up =)

Meet David (2nd from Left) from Scotland.. He really impressed me with his fluent Malay..It's not due to the fact that his wife is Malay (Pn Siti, next to David). He actually learn Malay in ANU long time ago and is now learning higher level of Indonesian since ANU doesn't offer Malay Language anymore..don't know why..

Ai Lin and Xin Yi LOVE the grapes =)

Hazel, High Com's wife, High Com himself

Their Mercedes =) 'DC 6001'

Later that evening, Bruce Hall had a Fashion Walk in conjunction with its Multicultural Week. Recognise the black Chinese costume, sis? Well, of course he doesn't dare to wear the pink side =p

Potluck

29th March 2008 (Sat)

Look what we had for potluck tonight =)

Sunny (Korea), Wan Sze (Spore), Wendy (Hong Kong) came over =)

Sunny and Wan Sze learning the tricks behind mahjong... I just like the way Sunny pronounce mahjong =p

It was also Earth's Hour tonight. Everyone's encouraged to switch off all the electrical appliances from 8-9pm as an effort to combat global warming. Meanwhile they've got nice fire-related performances in ANU campus.

They smartly arranged candles covered in small paper bags and formed the shape of the world map =)

I wish I'm THAT tall to appreciate the arrangement more...

I predict tomorrow's newspaper will feature the statistics of "How much electricity we've saved, how much less carbon dioxide was released just by stopping factory production and household use of electricity for an hour, etc"

28th March 2008 (Fri)

Meet Gungahlin, one of the farthest suburb from where I live.

The town centre does look good...well, it is one of the newly developed suburb in Canberra

And it has this: Hub Asian Supermarket, which offers a wide range of Asian products at cheap prices (well so I heard)

It'll be even prettier once this Linear Park is completed =) Wish I can come more often...but this suburb is super far....

Anyway...let's venture into the Asian Supermarket...

look what I found! Wei Min bought one straight away =p

This bunch of 'leng ngau' certainly isn't cheap...let alone appealing

Surprise! Surprise! (Aaron Bruhn 'Financial Math Lecturer' 2008) Didn't buy any...too much of a hassle =p

Wei Min and I spent two hours shopping in Gungahlin!

And this grumpy bus driver was definitely not in a good mood today. We were carrying our stuffs out from the trolley into the bus and understandably, took a little longer than usual cause there were so many HEAVY bags to carry. He couldn't even wait; he closed the bus door despite our attempt be as quick as possible. "Hang on! Hang on!" He reluctantly opened the door & said, "You wanna come in or not? I'm late!"

-sweat-

Not wanting to find fault with him, I apologised and made my way into the bus

Events

25th March 2008 (Tues)

It rained! Out of all the days it could’ve rained, it rained today, the day I have exam. But since rain is so rare in Canberra, I thought I'd take a picture on ANU on a rainy day =p

Anyway, we had Harmony Day last Thursday, just before everyone kick-start their long Easter weekend. I painted 'senyum lah with the smiley' on the banner =) nice right? Well, they asked me to write something at the border in my national language and it must have something to do with harmony...senyum lah sounds many times better than all the nilai-nilai moral we've learnt.

My Malaysian Students' Organisation (MSO) Committees..with some missing members

Besides serving 200+ free curry puffs (which ran out within an hour), we did a cool version of fan dance =p

And finally The Malaysian Students' Council of Australia (MASCA) ACT Chapter held The MASCA Sports Carnival in ANU last Saturday. Lucky thing that the official photographer did snap a picture of Sze Huey and I in action, even though the white line on the net seemed to be censoring Sze Huey's face =p

FIY, the guy in red with the cool pose is William and his partner is Yili. I refer to them as the Hong Kong couple although William is an Australian born Chinese ie not from HK. Basically, a fairytale mixed doubles journey began here when we beat this Hong Kong pair. Excitement starts to build as both pairs went point for point. It was only at the end when I realised, "Hey, we can actually win this match!" Well, I forgot to mention that William's a good player (constant training back home and competes frequently in Australia) while Yili's an above-average woman player. But lady luck was on our side... our winning point was gained thanks to the shuttle landing outside of the court.

The next pair we met was also a pair which everyone afraid off (badminton senior pairing up with the champion of women's singles). Somehow, we created an upset..

In the finals, we fought the pair who beat us in semis last year, the pair which represented MASCA ACT in the National Levels. We lost the first set...and came back strongly in second..and never looked back in the third =) They made lots of mistake in third game while Sze Huey and I happened to be in form =D Now this is when we should thank God for the luck He bestowed upon us.

3 unexpected mixed-doubles wins made my weekend =) Wish someone have recorded it...But then it might not be a good thing as I might end up watching it again and again....As for now, I can only count on flashbacks..

This also means Sze Huey and I will represent MASCA ACT in the NCG (National Conference & Games) in Brisbane middle of the year =) Won't wanna miss it after skipping last year's!

Random Thoughts

1. I follow my mum to the morning market pretty often when I was young. Whenever she complains about how expensive things were back then, I would go, “Mum, why can’t all the sellers low down the price to 1 cent? If I were one of them, I’ll sell all my stuffs to you for 1 cent each” =)

2. Have you ever told yourself (when you were a little kid), “I’ll never be like him!” whenever there’s a TVB drama character who for instance, loses his temper against his partner, spends too much time working (even bring work home with him) and neglects the people who cares deeply for him, makes promises which he later fails to keep because of numerous reason and end up disappointing those who are important to him, etc.. And the next thing you know, you’ve turned into him. You ARE the person whom you promised your-young-self, you won’t be!

It’s scary…..

It’s so true sometimes how movies and dramas depict people’s predicament. People make promises, hoping that they can fulfill them in the future. But circumstances change.. beyond your control…you’ve got no choice but to compromise your loved ones at times. Understanding people make life a lot easier for you during these situations but how many times can you get away with things? How many of them actually do understand?

You might be asked, “Why can’t your family comes first this time?” Putting yourself into another person’s shoes is so important and yet, an action so easily forgotten.
